Inspired by their remix of HEALTH’s “In Violet,” I gave the debut EP from Brooklyn-based ambient dance duo Blondes a spin. Expecting to be slightly bored as I usually am when listening to music labeled “ambient dance,” I was more than pleasantly surprised to find 42 minutes of pure auditory bliss. These guys strike just the right balance between extended repetition and dynamic progression by beating a four-note melody into your head while tossing in shimmery embellishments to keep things interesting. They’re masters of the epic build-up, and I could feel the insides of my brain melting when all the synths kicked in about halfway through penultimate track “Virgin Pacific.” Good stuff. Listen with headphones and enjoy.
