Destino January 29, 2010

The other night we watched this short film collaboration between animator Walt Disney and surrealist painter Salvador Dali:

The animation was storyboarded in 1945 but the project was soon abandoned due to financial constraints. Walt’s nephew, Roy Disney, unearthed the material and renewed the project in 1999, originally intending it to be released as part of Fantasia 2006. After that film was cancelled, Destino was screened to the public as a short in 2003 and will be released on Blu-ray and DVD sometime this year. If you’re interested, you can find more details on Wikipedia.

The film has a sort of surrealist vibe since its emphasis is on the fantastical imagery rather than any semblance of a plot. The most interesting thing, though, is how well the two artists blended their different styles. It’s hard to tell who drew what since everything seems to be both typical Disney and typical Dali at the same time, and it’s fun to spot the various influences and similarities to their other work as the film goes along. It’s definitely worth your seven minutes.

Tanlines are an electronic duo that have recently gained attention for remixing the likes of El Guincho and The Tough Alliance. Like many other remix artists before them, these guys have now started making their own songs with original vocals. Beginning with a split with some band called SALEM and the “Real Life” single which features remixes of the title track by Memory Tapes and Basic Needs (which are good only because they sound so similar to the original), Tanlines are well on their way to an excellent debut, assuming they continue to churn out these fantastic tracks of self-described “calypso disco electro music for various kinds of sex.” Check out and/or download “SAW” and “Real Life” below:

Watch for the Settings EP, featuring “Real Life” and 5 other tracks (including a collaboration with Glasser), set to drop March 9th. Also cross your fingers for a full-length sometime this year.

Doodles January 20, 2010

This past Christmas I received some crayons and this coloring book as a present:

‘Doodle All Year’ by Taro Gami is a book of 365 adorable doodle and coloring prompts, divided into sections for each of the four seasons, that get you started with a few basic images and tons of blank space in which to add to them. Among the multitude of creative and original prompt ideas are instructions like “Add some bugs to this tall grass!” and “Light this mosquito coil. It will make a lot of smoke!” that are supposedly fun for all ages.

After spending some time doodling with my friends this past weekend, I can vouch for that statement. We started out by just following the prompts and drawing a few storm clouds (“Uh oh! It turned into a thunderstorm!”), but once we actually had the crayons in our hands the creative juices began to flow and we started adding our own ideas to the page. Eventually we ended up completely re-writing the prompts and drawing what we felt like, but if it weren’t for all of the cute little images already drawn in the book we would have had a much more difficult time getting into it. Here are a few of the completed pages:

If only I had known jj would be leaking more new tracks from the jj no 3 sessions I would’ve waited before posting those two rare tracks from last week. “My Way” is bigger and better than both of them, and may be my favorite from jj so far. Containing an entire Lil Wayne verse swiped directly from Trina’s “Don’t Trip”, the song itself is hard to classify: it samples too much of the original song to be a cover, yet has too much new material to be a remix. The mix of jj’s style with the Weezy verse is so flawlessly executed that it sounds as if jj actually paired up with Lil Wayne to write and record this song (which I am all for if they want to do that in the future.) Could this be the next step for sampling/remixing/mashing? I’d certainly like to see more grand ideas like this in the future.

You might also want to check out “Let Go”, the first track leaked from the upcoming jj no 3. Hopefully I can get past the brilliance of jj and maybe post about something else soon, though with the March 9th release of no 3 right around the corner the odds of that happening might be slim.

Golden Ages – Tradition January 15, 2010

Artist: Golden Ages

Album: Tradition

Release: Self-Released, 2010

Genre: Electronica

RIYD: Candy Claws, Universal Studios Florida, Washed Out

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

Unlike the last album I posted, Golden Ages sound exactly like a lot of things I’ve heard before. Very much steeped in the recent wave of blissed-out, tropical, synth-y and danceable music inspired by Animal Collective’s most recent triumph, Tradition wears its influences proudly. This is a strong debut from a little band with a big sound: each of the tracks is layered with excellent production and a richness that makes it sound full and complete. Be it the pulsing Panda Bear-esque samples, the bright and sparkling synth layers, or the hazy fuzz covering the sighing vocals in the spirit of Washed Out, Golden Ages are young masters of their craft. After just one single, one EP, and one great debut, they’ve accomplished a sound in Tradition that takes other bands years to refine.

This one might be a bit hard to find, so here’s a link to where I stumbled across it on magiska, a direct download blog. You can also check out their myspace to download the single and EP for free and hear a sampling of their songs. Or, you can stream the first track from the album, “Waiting”, below:

A couple of rare and awesome tracks from Swedish duo jj have surfaced for streaming on the interwebs earlier this week. “Pure Shores” and “The Truth” are in the same vein as most of the material from jj’s debut from last year, jj no 2, and neither is from the upcoming jj no 3 to be released on March 9th. “Pure Shores” features auto-tuning of Elin Kastlander’s already smooth vocals atop some gentle drums and balearic atmospherics. “The Truth” is more generic and has an identical sound to some of the slower songs on no 2 like “Are You Still In Vallda?” and “Me & Dean” but with a much better melody.

jj – “Pure Shores”
from the vinyl edition of no 2, jj no 2.1 (not kidding)

jj – “The Truth”
from the “From Africa To Malaga” single

These are rips from youtube videos so the quality may not be up to snuff, but I think they’re both listenable. If you want higher quality you might have to buy the tracks (I couldn’t find them anywhere for download.) Enjoy!

Dragging An Ox Through Water – The Tropics Of Phenomenon January 14, 2010

Artist: Dragging An Ox Through Water

Album: The Tropics Of Phenomenon

Release: Freedom To Spend, 2009

Genre: Experimental

RIYD: Mount Eerie?

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

I found out about this album a few weeks ago from Forest Gospel, a music blog that posts reviews of some of the more obscure and experimental stuff that’s been coming out. Sometimes the albums they post are a bit too weird for me, but this one strikes just the right balance between noisy sonic experiments and listenable folk tunes, teetering on the crossover between noise, electronic, ambient, and folk music. I’ve never heard anything quite like The Tropics Of Phenomenon before, as you can tell from the lack of ideas for the RIYD, but Brian Mumford’s Dragging An Ox Through Water project is so immediately charming that it felt as familiar as something I had listened to over and over.

After listening to the album just once I was unpleasantly surprised to find that I was already one of the five “top listeners” on DAOTW’s last.fm page. It’s a real shame that this guy hasn’t gotten more exposure, so I guess I’ll try to help him along as much as I can. I might get in trouble for this, but I think it’d be more of a crime not to share this album, so here’s a Megaupload link to download the album and the debut EP “Rebukes!”. You can stream the second track from the album, “Snowbank Treatment,” below to see if you like the sound:

Here’s a new song that M.I.A. just tweeted, possibly from her album due out this summer. Diplo has been quoted describing the sound of the album as “Animal Collective meets Gucci Mane.” Sure sounds promising, as does this video.

Blog header January 10, 2010

Another one of our art assignments was to design a header for our class blog for practice using Photoshop. Inspired by Marcel Duchamp’s “L.H.O.O.Q.”, I decided to add my own modern twist to an old classic. My design was chosen to be the actual header for the blog. Thanks to Michelangelo for letting me borrow “The Creation Of Adam”:

Speaking of blog headers, you may have been wondering whether or not I intentionally put that butterfly up there by the blog title. The answer is no. It was one of the default banners I could pick from and I liked the forest theme, but unfortunately the butterfly is, for some inexplicable reason, an integral part of that design. As soon as I get back to school and can use Photoshop again I’ll be making a more personalized header. Any ideas as to what should be on it?

The top 20 tracks of 2009 January 7, 2010

Here are my top 20 tracks of 2009. This time I didn’t exclude anything (though I did try to avoid overlap with my albums list), and each track has a very good reason for being here, which is usually because of an extremely high play count due to leaving the song on repeat. There’s a link at the bottom of the post to download the whole bunch for your perusal.

20. Tonstartssbandht – “Little April Showers”

Tonstartssbandht give the Bambi song the remix treatment, adding dubby, bubbling synths beneath the original vocals for their modern take on a Disney classic.

19. Franz Ferdinand – “Live Alone (Delorean Remix)”

Delorean kept quite busy this year, offering a ton of remixes and the spectacular Ayrton Senna EP. This is my favorite of the bunch just for its pulsing piano beat.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

18. Beirut – “No Dice”

This one’s quite different from anything Zach Condon has written under the Beirut moniker, but its an excellent piece of danceable electronic pop that definitely shows his versatility as an artist.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

17. Toro Y Moi – “Blessa”

I wish I could say this was a preview of things to come from Toro Y Moi, but unfortunately the rest of the album seems dull and uninspired compared to this blissed-out and sample-heavy wonder of a track.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

16. Super Furry Animals – “Inaugural Trams”

The Super Furries’ nod to early synth pioneers Kraftwerk deals with the same kind of man vs. machine tensions, though in a much more fun and playful manner.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

15. Danger Mouse & Sparklehorse – “Star Eyes (I Can Catch It)”

It’s only fitting that the weirdest, trippiest, and best track from the Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse collaboration features distorted vocals from David Lynch.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

14. ABX – “I Love Friction”

The clash between the crass vocals from Asher Roth’s somewhat offensive single and one of the year’s cutest instrumentals (courtesy of The Pains of Being Pure at Heart) makes for the Hood Internet’s best mash-up of 2009.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

13. Memory Tapes – “Pink Stones”

The only thing I don’t like about Memory Tapes is Dayve Hawk’s voice. Luckily, this is one of the only tracks that is purely instrumental. Its use of what sound like old Nintendo sound effects gives the track tremendous appeal.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

12. Atlas Sound – “Walkabout”

This shiny dream-team collaboration between Bradford Cox and Noah Lennox pretty much speaks for itself. Anything with Panda Bear’s highly emotive voice is bound to be good, and this looping exercise is no exception.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

11. Major Lazer – “Zumbi”

This electro-dancehall track is a zombie’s thought process in rap form. But what’s even scarier than a zombie eating your brain is when you realize that the voice you thought was an androgynous robot is actually Andy Milonakis.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

10. Bon Iver – “Woods”

Though this track was revamped with additional instrumentation on Volcano Choir’s Unmap, this early version has a much more powerful effect as it highlights Justin Vernon’s multi-tracked, auto-tuned falsetto choir.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

9. tUnE-yArDs – “Fiya”

What starts as a playful romp in the form of a lo-fi percussive beat quickly escalates into a whirlwind of emotion as Merrill Garbus shows that her voice is a powerful force to be reckoned with.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

8. Animal Collective – “What Would I Want? Sky (BBC Session)”

I’ve been conflicted for awhile over the studio version of this, but I think I prefer the accentuated percussive blasts and the more patient sound layering of the BBC session.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

7. Fuck Buttons – “Surf Solar”

Though the entire album is spectacular, the first track of Tarot Sport exemplifies the group’s bizarre integration of noise with danceable beats, showcasing both the energy of the night out and the grit of the morning after.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

6. Yeasayer – “Tightrope”

The pulsating, shimmery guitar bursts of Yeasayer’s contribution to this year’s best compilation album begin the band’s move closer to Animal Collective’s sound that will be completed on their upcoming Odd Blood.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

5. A Sunny Day In Glasgow – “Failure”

Though this is a list of single tracks, its actually better to hear “Failure” in the context of its album, Ashes Grammar, as its organic rhythms emerge from the hazy ether of the preceding atmospheric tracks.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

4. Passion Pit – “Moth’s Wings”

Another song that I initially liked only because of its similarity to Animal Collective, the endearing “Moth’s Wings” has been rapidly climbing my list of all-time favorite tracks with each listen I gave it this year.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

3. Destroyer – “Bay Of Pigs”

Destroyer has made some epic ballads, but “Bay Of Pigs” is the most epic and sonically brilliant Destroyer song I’ve heard yet, and it’s nice to see Dan Bejar dabbling in the less familiar worlds of ambient and disco music.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

2. Vampire Weekend – “California English Pt. 2”

When I finally found an mp3 of this track, I sat down and listened to it on repeat for almost seven hours, propelling it to the top of my most-played iTunes list. Its glitchy vocal backdrop makes this b-side deserving of the spot.

ANY_CHARACTER_HERE

1. Phoenix – “Love Like A Sunset (Animal Collective Remix)”

So this is what Deakin’s been up to lately. His “jam” takes the best of both bands, layering vocals from Avey, Panda, and Thomas Mars with a subtle wash of guitars, synths, and percussion in the best remix and track of 2009.

And so the countdowns conclude. Here’s the link I promised to a zip file of all 20 tracks (normally I would put it on MediaFire but they’re being a bit moody right now.) Let me know what you think!
